Oral healthcare is the science and practice of diagnosing, treating and preventing diseases, injuries and malformations of the teeth, mouth and jaws. Dental surgeries or laboratories are headed by qualified dentists who are variously supported by dental assistants, dental technicians, therapists, hygienists or prosthetists. Usually these staff carry out specific tasks under the supervision of a dentist, but dental technicians may be in charge of their own lab.

Together as a team, these staff have the satisfaction of making a real difference to the oral health of the community. You can find out more about dental occupations at the Australian Dental Association site: www.ada.org.au.

If this field of work appeals to you, WAIFS offers courses that can help qualify you as either a dental assistant or a dental technician.
